Businessman looks at town for academy

Sep 12 2008

By Charlotte Paxton

Businessman Bob Edmiston, who sponsors the The Grace Academy in Coventry, is considering opening another city academy in Walsall borough. Pupils at the inauguration ceremony of the Coventry school were told that a sister academy may be set up in Darlaston.

Millionaire Christian businessman Edmiston is considering backing a city academy to replace Darlaston Community Science College in Herberts Park Road, Darlaston.

If the proposal goes ahead it will be the third academy in the West Midlands to be sponsored by Mr Edmiston. He already sponsors The Grace Academy in Wigston Road, Woodway Park, Coventry and The Grace Academy in Chelmsley Wood.

If he became a sponsor of a city academy to replace Darlaston Community Science College it would also be called The Grace Academy.

A consultation about the plans with parents and staff at the school has just began.

It is not yet decided whether the new academy would specialise in science, as the current school does, or in business and enterprise as the other two Grace Academies do.

Managing director for Walsall Children's Services Tony Stainer said: "We are dedicated to improving the quality of education for children at Darlaston Community Science College.

"If the proposal were to be approved the school would be replaced with a Grace Academy in September 2009."
