Man found in canal had been cut up into 11 pieces

Jul 11 2008

The body of a Darlaston man whose decomposed remains were found in a Wolverhampton canal three months ago had been chopped up into 11 pieces, police have revealed.

The remains of David Daly were found in a canal near Cannock Road in March, sparking a murder inquiry.

But officers have yet to find Mr Daly's head and part of his left leg, despite draining an area of the canal.

Murder squad detectives revealed that Mr Daly, aged 31, was a small-time cannabis dealer and they were looking to see whether that was a motive for his murder.

Three people, two men and a woman, have been arrested on suspicion of Mr Daly's murder and are currently on police bail.

DCI Rick Baker, who is leading the murder hunt, said: "The dismemberment of the body has happened after the victim's death.

"We know that he was cut up into 11 pieces after he was killed.

"There has been considerable effort to cut up the body and dispose of it.

"This is a particularly violent and gruesome way to get rid of a body and whoever did this is particularly dangerous."

Mr Daly's remains were found in March by a passer-by after police had spent months searching for him.

He was reported missing from his King Street, Darlaston, home on December 8.

A post-mortem examination has taken place and officers are working with experts at Leicester University to determine the cause of Mr Daly's death.

DCI Baker said officers had received five 999 calls from an anonymous man with knowledge of what happened to Daly and he appealed for the caller to come forward again.

The calls were made from telephone kiosks across Wolverhampton.

Thousands of leaflets are to be distributed in the Wolverhampton area encouraging local residents to come forward as detectives step up their bid to solve the mystery murder of Mr Daly.

Appealing for information on the last known sighting of Mr Daly, DCI Baker said it was known that he dealt cannabis to a friend on the morning he was last seen.

"We are looking at several motives and the drugs link is an obvious one we have to consider, but we are keeping an open mind.

"I would appeal to anyone who has information about this investigation to come forward."

It has also been revealed that police searched an address in Cemetery Road, Willenhall, as part of their ongoing investigations but nothing was found to assist the inquiry.

Mr Daly was not thought to have family living locally but police have been liaising with relatives to try to build up a picture of his lifestyle.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the major investigation unit on 0845 113 5000, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
