Walsall super-show ends MKD dreams

Apr 29 2009

MK Dons 0 Walsall 1

Walsall made sure they had a say in the Coca Cola League One promotion issue by beating MK Dons at their new Milton Keynes Stadium on Saturday, at the same time ensuring Peterborough United clinched their rise to The Championship, writes The Saddler.

Trust the Saddlers to win away just a week after losing at home, and the travelling fans were rewarded for their loyalty. MK Dons are not popular with football supporters arond the country for the way they pinched Wimbledon's identity, and it's good to see that the real Dons have clinched promotion to the Blue Square Premier and could be fighting to return to the League next season.

After early MKD pressure in which the recalled Clayton Ince saved well from former Walsall winger Mark Wright, the visitors kept the home team quiet and began to look capable of winning their final away game.

Fittingly, the vital goal came from hard-working Jabo Ibehre who accepted a clearance from the excellent Anthony Gerrard in the 61st minute, turned a defender inside out then cracked a fierce drive into the net for his 11th goal of the season, ensuring MKD would have to compete in the play-offs.

Suddenly Jabo has found his shooting boots - and what a good player he looks.

The recall of Ince was also a key factor in the Saddlers'seventh away win. He made some crucial saves when the Dons stepped up the pressure late on.

Attendance: 12,094
