Champion! This Queen and Ben Elton musical is a sure fire hit, packed with brilliant music and laced with a giant helping of humour. Before curtain up you can hear people in the audience predicting that it’s the story of the legendary stars Queen, but in fact the rather wierd fantasy tale is set many years in the future when all musical instruments are banned by a tough regime. Don’t worry, it all comes right in the end with musical director David Beer and his great band belting out Radio Ga Ga, I Want to Break Free, Bohemian Rhapsody, We Are the Champions and many more. Leading the rebellion against authority are Galileo and Scaramouche, brilliantly played by Alex Gaumond and Sarah French-Ellis, with other outstanding performances from Wayne A. Robinson (Britney), Rachel John (Meat), Kevin Kennedy (Pop) and Jonathan Wilkes in stark white wig and black shades playing the villainous Commander Khashoggi. Terrific special effects and fascinating action played on a wide screen at the rear of the stage add to the overall enjoyment of a stunning show that runs to September 5. It’s a must to see. |
